There’s no trophy. There’s no branded name like the Iron Bowl. But if you’ve been anywhere near a Sunshine State Conference gym or pitch lately, you know something is happening between Eckerd College and Saint Leo University, and right now, it’s happening almost entirely in one direction.
Separated by about an hour of west-central Florida highway, Eckerd on the waterfront in St. Petersburg and Saint Leo tucked inland in Pasco County, the Tritons and Lions have been trading punches for decades in the Sunshine State Conference, the Division II league known as the “Conference of National Champions.” Proximity breeds familiarity, familiarity breeds rowdy student sections, and rowdy student sections breed a rivalry. What the record books now show is a rivalry in the middle of a full-blown power shift.
Basketball: The Tritons’ House, Then and Now
Men’s basketball is where the rivalry first caught fire. Back in 2012 and 2013, both programs were nationally ranked at the same time, Eckerd at No. 24 and Saint Leo at No. 21, and Saint Leo delivered one of its signature blows by knocking second-seeded Eckerd out of the 2012 SSC Tournament semifinals.
Zoom out, though, and this series has always leaned teal. Since the first meeting in January 2002, Eckerd owns the matchup 37-15, and the current stretch is as one-sided as it’s ever been: a six-game Triton win streak, including a clean sweep of the 2025-26 season series. The February 18 finale was the exclamation point, as Eckerd trailed 47-39 at halftime, then dropped a 48-20 second half on the Lions to win 87-67. A 28-point swing between halves in a rivalry game is the kind of thing students talk about until the next tip-off.
For the record, the all-time high-water mark remains Eckerd’s 98-53 demolition in January 2008. Saint Leo’s best hope lately? Overtime. The Lions’ rare recent wins have needed extra minutes or come down to a single possession.
Volleyball: A Dead-Even Series That Doesn’t Feel Even Anymore
If you want the purest distillation of this rivalry, look at volleyball. All-time, it could not be tighter: Saint Leo leads 24-23 across more than two decades. This series has had eras. Eckerd ruled 2011-12, and Saint Leo answered with a five-match win streak from 2016 to 2018.
Now it’s Eckerd’s era again, emphatically. The Tritons have won eight of the last ten meetings and carry a five-match win streak into next season. The last four have all been sweeps, capped by a November 2025 statement inside Saint Leo’s own Marion Bowman Activities Center: 25-11, 25-17, 25-17. That 3-0 rout ties the most decisive result in series history, and it means Eckerd can seize the all-time lead the very next time these teams share a net.
Soccer: Two Series, One Identical Storyline
Here’s where the shift gets almost eerie. Both soccer rivalries started as Saint Leo strongholds and have flipped in near-perfect parallel.
Men’s soccer began in 2006 with Saint Leo winning five of the first six meetings. Fast forward: the Lions are 1-7-2 in the last ten, including a six-match winless run against the Tritons that stretched from 2018 to 2024. In the most recent match, this past October in St. Petersburg, Saint Leo took a 2-0 lead into halftime and Eckerd clawed back for a 2-2 draw.
Women’s soccer is the most dramatic turnaround of all. For years this wasn’t a rivalry; it was a recurring nightmare for the Tritons. Saint Leo hung scorelines like 8-0, 9-1, and 6-0 on Eckerd and still leads the all-time series 18-8-4. But since 2017, Eckerd is 5-2-3 in the matchup. And on October 8, 2025, the same night the men played to that draw across the state, the Triton women walked into Saint Leo and won 4-0. It was Eckerd’s largest margin of victory in the 23-year history of the series, and it came on the road.

Before Triton fans get too comfortable: Saint Leo remains one of the most decorated athletic departments in Division II. The Lions have stacked up 30 Sunshine State Conference championships and well over a hundred NCAA Championship appearances, finished as high as second nationally in the Learfield Directors’ Cup, and own national titles in men’s golf (2016) and, as of this June, softball, where Saint Leo beat McKendree University in Chattanooga to claim the 2026 NCAA Division II crown.
That title fits the neighborhood. The SSC has produced 136 Division II national team championships, including a conference-record eight in 2024-25 alone. In this league, nobody stays down for long, which is exactly what makes the current head-to-head skid so striking, and the next few seasons of this rivalry so much fun.
