Michigan State Basketball: What Last Season Proved, and What Comes Next

What Last Season Proved, and What Comes Next

The 2027 Final Four is at Ford Field in Detroit on April 3 and 5, and Michigan State is the host institution. It is also the first 76 team tournament, expanded from 68. Izzo enters his 32nd season with the best player from last year’s team choosing to come back.

Detroit last hosted in 2009. Michigan State beat UConn in the semifinal at Ford Field that year, then lost the title game to North Carolina. Last season ended against UConn too.

Last season, briefly

The Spartans went 27-8 and 15-5 in the Big Ten, earned a No. 3 seed, beat North Dakota State and Louisville, then lost to UConn 63-67 in the Sweet Sixteen. UConn played for the national title.

Jeremy Fears Jr. led the nation with 9.4 assists a game, added 15.2 points, and broke the school single season assist record with 328. Izzo won his 750th career game in January. It was the 28th straight NCAA Tournament, the longest active streak in the country.

What changed

Fears withdrew from the NBA Draft on May 27 and returns for his redshirt junior year. That decision moved Michigan State from rebuilding to a preseason top three in most way too early polls.

Around him: Coen Carr at 12.0 points on 51.8 percent shooting, plus Kur Teng, Jordan Scott, Cam Ward, and Jesse McCulloch. Kaleb Glenn is expected back healthy after missing all of last season. Anton Bonke arrives at 7 feet 2, alongside a four man freshman class ranked among the nation’s best.

Gone: five players out of eligibility, including both frontcourt starters. Carson Cooper took 11.1 points and 7.1 rebounds with him. Jaxon Kohler took 12.5 and a team best 8.9. Divine Ugochukwu transferred to LSU.

The Kohler situation, as of August 17

A July 31 injunction granted the 2022 class a fifth year. An August 2 clarification limited those players to their former teams, and Izzo said two days later his roster was set. Since then, injunctions in Ohio and Tennessee have granted transfer rights, a California case is pending, and a Tenth Circuit ruling is expected within days. On3 ranks Kohler the third best fifth year player available. BYU is the reported frontrunner, with Louisville, Kentucky, and Kansas in pursuit. He is not returning to East Lansing either way.

The schedule

Three Big Ten home and homes: Michigan, the defending national champion, plus Nebraska and Maryland. Torvik has that trio first, fourth, and eleventh in the conference, and Michigan State second. Nonconference includes Gonzaga on December 19 in Palm Springs, a trip to Tennessee, and the Champions Classic in Chicago. The season opens November 1.

Three things that decide it

  1. The frontcourt holds. Bonke and Glenn have to cover 23 points and 16 rebounds that walked out.
  2. Someone shoots. MSU hit 35.9 percent from three last year and lost its best stretch big.
  3. Fears stays healthy. There is no second version of him on this roster.

Get all three and the arithmetic points to a building 90 miles from campus that Michigan State happens to be hosting.
