That’s a 24-year gap most current players and plenty of their coaches weren’t around for. Saturday’s Duke’s Mayo Classic isn’t a rekindled grudge so much as a rivalry meeting a new generation for the first time.
Two unbeaten teams, two different identities
Virginia enters at 2-0 after outscoring its first two opponents by a combined 93-11, including a 59-3 rout of Norfolk State. West Virginia is also 2-0 for the first time since 2018, coming off a 52-7 win over UT Martin built almost entirely on the ground. The Mountaineers are averaging 5.3 yards per carry behind quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. and running back Cam Cook, who’ve combined for six rushing touchdowns through two weeks.
Virginia’s defense has been the mirror image: stingy against exactly the kind of attack it’s about to see, allowing just 2.4 yards per carry and one rushing touchdown all season.

Virginia head coach Tony Elliott and West Virginia’s Rich Rodriguez go back further than either roster. Rodriguez was Elliott’s offensive coordinator at Clemson in 2000, when Elliott played wide receiver there, which means Saturday’s chess match is also a reunion between two people who know exactly how the other one thinks.
