Opening weekend is loaded across every conference. Some of the marquee matchups (all times Eastern):
- Big Ten: Minnesota heads to Michigan Tech, while Michigan tangles with Bowling Green
- Hockey East: Maine renews its rivalry with Holy Cross, and Boston University opens with a late night trip to Alaska
- NCHC: Miami visits Northern Michigan, and Denver (yes, the defending champs) travels to Alaska Anchorage
- ECAC: Quinnipiac hosts New Hampshire in a Friday night opener
It’s a full slate right out of the gate, with several conference games doubling as early measuring sticks for the season ahead.
The Ice Breaker Turns 30
One of the best early season traditions in college hockey, the Ice Breaker Tournament, celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Set for October 9 and 10, this year’s field brings together host schools UConn and Sacred Heart alongside Penn State and Bowling Green, a nice mix of programs from different corners of the sport, all battling it out before the season really heats up.
The Road to Washington, D.C.
Everything this season builds toward the 2027 Frozen Four, which heads to Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., for the semifinals and championship on April 8 and 10.
That’s a tough act to follow after last season’s thriller: Denver edged Wisconsin 2 to 1 in the 2026 championship game, claiming the program’s 11th national title, more than any other school in tournament history.
