The Battle of the Real HU: Inside the Howard vs Hampton Rivalry

Inside the Howard vs Hampton Rivalry

Every fall, two of the most storied HBCUs in America fight over two letters. Howard calls itself HU. Hampton calls itself HU. Only one can be the Real HU, and since 1908 the football field is where they settle it, at least for a year. The Battle of the Real HU is one of the oldest rivalries in HBCU football, and its home at Audi Field in Washington, D.C. has turned it into one of the marquee weekends on the HBCU calendar. Hampton leads the all-time series 58–44–1 by the schools’ official count. The Pirates are 3–1 at Audi Field. Howard won in 2025.

Origins: The Mecca vs. Home by the Sea

The two schools were founded one year apart. Howard University opened in 1867 in Washington, D.C., and became the federally chartered flagship of Black higher education, the school its alumni call The Mecca. Hampton followed in 1868 on the Virginia shoreline, operating as Hampton Institute for more than a century before earning university status in 1984. Its graduates call it Home by the Sea.

The alumni lists explain why neither side gives an inch. Howard produced Thurgood Marshall, Toni Morrison and Vice President Kamala Harris. Hampton produced Booker T. Washington, NASA engineer Mary Jackson and Wanda Sykes. Both schools are routinely named among the Black Ivy League. Both draw students from the same families, the same churches and the same cities.

The capital vs. the coast. Bison vs. Pirates. Red, white and blue vs. reflex blue and white. About 170 miles of I-95 and I-64 separate the campuses, and the argument covers every one of them.

1908 to Audi Field: How the Game Grew Up

The first meeting came in 1908, and for most of the next century the game was a conference fixture, first in the CIAA, the oldest HBCU conference in the country, and then in the MEAC. It mostly alternated between Howard’s Greene Stadium and Hampton’s Armstrong Stadium, with detours to the Polo Grounds in New York, Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands, RFK Stadium in D.C. and Soldier Field in Chicago.

Realignment nearly broke it. Hampton announced in 2017 that it was leaving the MEAC for the Big South, and the MEAC barred its members from playing the Pirates in 2018. The rivalry skipped a year for the first time in decades before resuming at the Chicago Football Classic in 2019.

In 2021 the game moved to Audi Field as the Truth and Service Classic. It has since been renamed the Battle of the Real HU, finally matching the name everyone already used. The 2025 game drew 18,672 fans, and Saturday’s game will be the 101st meeting.

The Defining Moments

1969–1980 — Howard’s 12 Straight: The Bison owned the 1970s, winning 12 consecutive games. The peak came in 1973, a 51–0 rout that remains Howard’s largest margin of victory in the series.

1997–2010 — Hampton’s 14 Straight: The Pirates answered with the longest win streak in series history, many of those wins in front of huge neutral-site crowds in D.C. and New Jersey. The streak got so famous that President Barack Obama joked about it during his 2010 commencement address at Hampton, saying the last time Howard won, The Fugees were still together.

2011 — Howard Snaps the Streak: Under head coach and alum Gary “Flea” Harrell, Howard went into Armstrong Stadium and won 10–7. Harrell later said the hardest part was getting his players past the mental block. The Bison won the next three as well, including a 42–39 shootout in 2013 and a 30–29 thriller in 2014.

2021 — The Audi Field Debut: The first game in the new home drew Vice President Kamala Harris, a Howard alum, who flipped the coin. Hampton spoiled the occasion with a 48–32 win, the start of a 3–0 run for the Pirates in the stadium.

2022–2024 — Three One-Score Games: Hampton won 31–28 in 2022, 35–34 in 2023 and 27–20 in 2024. That made eight straight Pirates wins, and the last three came by a combined 11 points.

2025 — Howard 34, Hampton 7: The Bison scored in each of the first three quarters and led 34–0 before Hampton found the end zone in the fourth. It was Howard’s largest winning margin in the series since the 1970s and ended the Pirates’ eight-game streak in front of 18,672 fans. For the first time since 2014, Howard enters the Real HU defending bragging rights.

Halftime Is Game Time

As with every great HBCU classic, a big share of the crowd is there for the bands. Howard’s Showtime Marching Band and Hampton’s Marching Force bring the sound, the drumlines and the choreography that make halftime a second competition. Fans argue the halftime result as hard as the final score.

The rest of the weekend is a homecoming in someone else’s city. Alumni chapters host tailgates and watch parties from D.C. to Harlem, where the Howard and Hampton alumni clubs of New York are co-hosting one at The Fox Harlem.

The rivalry also spills into other sports. Howard beat Hampton 4–1 in women’s soccer in August 2025, and the schools played a men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader at CareFirst Arena last December.

Two Conferences, Real NIL Stakes

The rivals no longer share a league. Howard plays in the MEAC, where it won back-to-back championships in 2022 and 2023. The Bison opened 2026 against Alabama A&M in Atlanta and then took on a demanding nonconference slate that included road trips to Indiana and Rutgers.

Hampton spent four seasons in the Big South and has played in the Coastal Athletic Association since 2022. The Pirates claim seven Black College National Championships and are in year one under head coach Van Malone, hired in December 2025. They come to D.C. off a 42–21 loss to Norfolk State in the Battle of the Bay.

The NIL picture at the two schools looks different too. Howard is federally chartered, which shapes how it can fund athletes and pushes much of its NIL activity to third parties like the alumni-led Mecca Society. We broke that down in Howard University NIL Deals: The Mecca Society and HBCU NIL Reality and Washington D.C. NIL Laws. Hampton athletes operate under Virginia’s rules and compete in a CAA that also includes North Carolina A&T, covered in CAA Football NIL Deals. In both cases, alumni and fans carry most of the load.

That’s where RallyFuel comes in. Bison fans can back Howard athletes directly on the Howard University page. Pirates fans can do the same on the Hampton University page. Every deal is milestone-based, so money moves only when the athlete hits the goal (here’s how the no-risk model works), and RallyFuel’s schools leaderboard tracks which fan base is fueling harder. Make your pick. Neither team arrives on a hot streak: Hampton comes in at 1–4 and Howard at 1–3, so the Real HU is a chance for one of them to reset its season. Think the Bison defend last year’s 34–7 win, or do the Pirates take the initials back to Virginia? Make your Hampton vs. Howard prediction on RallyFuel and join the game chat before kickoff.

Why the Real HU Persists

The Real HU has survived two world wars, the move to Division I, conference realignment, a year off, a pandemic and a rotating list of stadiums from New York to Chicago. It lasts because the question at its center can never really be answered. Two schools founded a year apart, both built to educate Black Americans when much of the country refused to, both convinced they wear the initials best. A football game is just the most public place to argue about it.

It belongs with the biggest classics in HBCU football, alongside the Magic City Classic and the Florida Classic, and on any list of college football’s best rivalries. For more on the leagues, see MEAC NIL Deals and the MEAC Football Schedule 2026, or browse all our rivalry deep dives.

Hampton leads all-time 58–44–1. The Pirates are 3–1 at Audi Field. Howard won 34–7 in 2025 and snapped an eight-game skid. The 101st meeting decides who holds the initials for another year.
