The Eagles and Owls have met ten times since 2007, and the all time series sits dead even at five wins apiece. They’ve now played four straight years, and the games keep getting tighter. December 30, 2023. No. 7 Florida Atlantic, fresh off a Final Four run, walked into a packed Alico Arena to face a struggling FGCU squad. The Eagles didn’t care about the rankings. Zach Anderson dropped 21, Dallion Johnson added 18, and FGCU pulled off the biggest home win in program history. The result was later vacated by the NCAA, but nobody in Fort Myers has forgotten what happened on that floor.
November 30, 2024. In Boca Raton this time, FGCU let an eight point lead slip away as the Owls stormed back with an 8 to 0 run to tie it late. Then Jevin Muniz rose up and buried a buzzer beating three to win it 80 to 78 on FAU’s home court. Silence in Boca. Bedlam on the Eagles bench.
December 7, 2025. Revenge, served cold. Down 11 in the second half at Alico Arena, Florida Atlantic ripped off a 12 to 0 run and escaped with an 81 to 76 win, its first over FGCU in three years. The Owls made sure everyone knew it, too, chirping at FGCU fans on the way to the locker room. Rivalries aren’t polite.
Why This One Matters
Great rivalries need stakes, drama, and genuine dislike. This series has all three: a ranked team stunned on the road, a buzzer beater in enemy territory, a comeback capped with taunts. Add in the geography, two rising programs separated by a two hour drive across the state, and you have a game that fans on both sides circle the moment the schedule drops.
FGCU enters the next chapter with Pat Chambers rebuilding a roster hungry to reclaim the edge and chase another ASUN crown. Florida Atlantic, now battle tested in the American Conference, finally has momentum in the series again. Someone has to take the lead in a rivalry that’s never had one.
