UConn vs Michigan: why this rematch is different

The Associated Press called this rematch one of the most notable early-season games on the schedule, but very little of April’s matchup remains. Three Michigan frontcourt players, Morez Johnson, Yaxel Lendeborg and Aday Mara, were taken among the top 12 selections in the 2026 NBA Draft. Boynton, a former assistant on May’s staff, now runs a team that returns Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney from the title run.

This game is part of the TNT Sports Hall of Fame Series, and it is Michigan’s first regular-season meeting with UConn since the 2015 Battle 4 Atlantis. The site also gives UConn a shorter trip than a Michigan team traveling from Ann Arbor, so expect plenty of Huskies fans in the building on Friday night.

1. Who wins the guard battle?

This looks like the most important matchup on the floor. Demary is the Big East preseason player of the year per the AP, and he had 8 assists in the opener. Across from him, Cadeau had 6 assists against Oakland, with McKenney leading Michigan in scoring. Whichever side controls tempo likely sets the terms of the game, because both offenses will still be working out new combinations this early.

2. Can Michigan replace its size?

Losing three big men to the NBA would change any team. J.P. Estrella grabbed 12 rebounds in the 84-68 win over Oakland, which is an encouraging first sign. UConn answered with 12 rebounds of its own from Na’jai Hines in its 86-46 win over Gardner-Webb. The rebounding margin could tell us whether Michigan’s rebuilt frontcourt is ready for a top-five opponent.

3. Braylon Mullins’ scoring

Mullins scored 20 points to lead UConn in its opener. If he repeats that against a ranked opponent on national television, UConn’s offense becomes much harder to guard, since Michigan cannot focus only on Demary. He is the player most likely to swing this one with a hot shooting night. Don’t read too much into the opening scores, though. UConn’s 40-point win and Michigan’s 16-point win came against very different opponents, so Friday is the first real measure of both teams.

4. Mike Boynton’s first big test

Boynton has one game as Michigan’s head coach, and now he gets a top-five team in a neutral arena. The Wolverines won their opener by 16, but UConn is a far bigger step up. How he adjusts in the second half will say a lot about this team’s ceiling. For UConn, this is the first chance to answer April’s loss, even with a new group.

5. What it means for the season

Nobody’s season is decided in early November, but both schedules get hard quickly. An early win over a ranked opponent is valuable when the selection committee looks at resumes in March. For Michigan, it would also be an early statement that the title defense is real, even after all that roster turnover. For UConn, it would validate a No. 4 ranking and give the Huskies momentum heading into the rest of their nonconference schedule.
