Twelve Saturdays (and One Tuesday): Marshall 2026 Football Is Here

The Thundering Herd’s 2026 slate is officially on the books, and it is a fun one. There’s a Big Ten stage in week one, a Tuesday night showcase on ESPN2, a home opener against an old friend, and a November full of games that matter.

Here’s what Marshall fans need to know, and which dates to circle right now.

Six home games, six on the road, and eight straight Sun Belt matchups from Oct. 3 to the finish. Open dates fall on Oct. 17 and Oct. 24.

Year two under Gibby

Tony Gibson is entering his second season leading the program he grew up around, and this is the year the roster is truly his.

It starts under center. Carlos Del Rio-Wilson is back for his final season, and he had every reason to look elsewhere after throwing for 2,043 yards with 17 touchdowns and running for another 660. He chose Huntington. In July he was named a 2026 Allstate/AFCA Good Works Team nominee, which recognizes what a player does off the field as much as on it. That’s the guy leading this offense.

The backfield around him is deep and experienced. Jo’Shon Barbie arrives from McNeese State as a senior with five rushing touchdowns to his name. TJ Lester comes in from West Georgia after a 400 yard season as a sophomore. And Judah Price, a West Virginia kid out of Sophia, is back for year two.

Gibson worked the portal hard, and it shows. The 2026 roster features players who have suited up at NC State, West Virginia, Michigan State, Mississippi State, Oklahoma, UNC, Virginia Tech, Syracuse, and Vanderbilt. Brad Lambert takes over as defensive coordinator.

There’s also a West Virginia thread running through this team worth celebrating. Huntington, Winfield, Hurricane, Poca, Milton, Barboursville, Wheeling, Martinsburg, South Charleston, and Matewan all have a kid on this roster. So do Stuttgart and Munich, Germany, and Madrid, Spain. That’s the Herd: homegrown and global at the same time.

Twelve games. Here’s how they set up.

September: the Herd go big

Marshall opens at Beaver Stadium against Penn State on Sept. 5, a 3:30 p.m. kickoff on FS1. This is the biggest stage the program will see all year, and it’s the kind of environment that makes players. It’s also just the third meeting ever between these two, with the first two coming before 1930, so almost a century of history gets a new chapter.

There’s a real opening here, too. It’s Matt Campbell’s first game as Penn State’s head coach with a largely new roster. Week one against a brand new staff is the best possible window for a Sun Belt team walking into a Big Ten building.

Week two brings Middle Tennessee to Huntington for the home opener under the lights at 7 p.m. The Blue Raiders are an old Conference USA rival, so this one carries some history, and it’s the first chance to see this team in front of the home crowd.

Then it’s on the road to Missouri State for a night game on CBS Sports Network, national television for a Saturday evening kickoff. The Bears are in year two at the FBS level, so this is a young program on the rise and a good measuring stick.

Gardner-Webb closes the month at home on a Saturday afternoon. It’s the last tune up before conference play, and it lands in exactly the right spot on the calendar.

October: primetime in Huntington

Sun Belt play opens Oct. 3 at JMU. The Dukes have built something impressive since arriving from FCS, and Bridgeforth Stadium will be loud, which makes it exactly the kind of game that announces a season.

Coastal Carolina comes to Huntington on Oct. 10. The Chanticleers always bring energy, and this is the conference home opener.

Then comes the best night of the season. Tuesday, Oct. 20, South Alabama, ESPN2, a standalone weeknight national broadcast at Joan C. Edwards Stadium, with open dates on both sides. Marshall gets eleven days to prepare and the entire country’s attention with no competing college football on the schedule.

If you go to one home game this year, make it this one. Weeknight ESPN2 windows are how programs get seen, and Huntington on a Tuesday night under the lights is about as good as college football gets.

October wraps with a Halloween trip to Old Dominion, a fellow Sun Belt newcomer that made the jump alongside Marshall.

November: the stretch run

Four conference games to finish, and every one of them counts.

The Georgia Southern trip on Nov. 7 opens the closing stretch. Then Huntington gets the two biggest home dates of the year back to back: App State on Nov. 14 and Georgia State on Nov. 21. App State is the Sun Belt’s most recognizable brand and a natural Appalachian foil for the Herd, so expect the loudest crowd of the season. Georgia State is the home finale and Senior Day, the last time this senior class runs out of that tunnel.

The season closes at ULM on Nov. 28, Thanksgiving weekend, with everything still to play for.

Worth knowing for the league picture: the Sun Belt is at 14 teams in 2026 with Louisiana Tech coming aboard. The conference keeps getting stronger.

Seven of the twelve kickoff times are still to be announced. The Sun Belt sets most conference windows about 12 days out, so those will fill in as the fall goes on. What doesn’t have to wait is the part fans control.
