The Headliner: North Carolina at Georgetown
Georgetown vs North Carolina is the best game on the board and it is not especially close.
Georgetown won the 2019 national championship and has been a fixture in the Big East’s upper tier ever since, a program built on possession and patience that tends to make opponents look hurried. North Carolina brings its own pedigree and an ACC schedule waiting on the other side of non-conference play.

Syracuse’s Title Defense Era Continues
UConn vs Syracuse is the other heavyweight opener.
Syracuse won the 2022 national championship, the program’s first, and has spent the seasons since proving it was not a fluke. UConn is one of the sport’s genuinely historic programs and plays in a Big East that sends teams to the tournament in bunches.
This is an ACC versus Big East collision in the opening week, which in men’s soccer terms is roughly the equivalent of a top ten non-conference football game.
ACC vs Big Ten, Men’s Edition
The crossover series that opened the women’s season carries into the men’s slate.
Pittsburgh vs Maryland is the marquee entry on your board. Pitt reached the national quarterfinals in four of five seasons before a down 2025 under Jay Vidovich, and Maryland is one of the Big Ten‘s most decorated programs. A Panthers side looking to reestablish itself against a Terrapins team that will not make it comfortable.
Michigan vs Loyola Marymount and Michigan State vs University at Albany round out the Big Ten’s opening night, with both in-state programs hosting.
The Big East Is Everywhere
Six Big East programs are in action, which is what happens when a conference this deep all opens the same night.
- Maryland vs St. John’s: the Red Storm have been one of the conference’s most consistent NCAA Tournament sides.
- Villanova vs Temple: the Philadelphia derby, four miles up the Main Line.
- Creighton vs Florida International: the Bluejays host, and Creighton at home is a genuinely hard night out.
- Providence vs Sacred Heart: a New England opener with a short bus ride.
- Butler vs Northern Illinois: the Bulldogs open in Indianapolis.
The Pac-12 Plays Men’s Soccer Again
This is the part of the schedule nobody outside the West has noticed yet.
After the conference collapsed, Pac-12 men’s soccer went dark. It comes back in 2026 through a partnership with the Big West, with seven teams: full members Gonzaga, Oregon State and San Diego State, joined by affiliates California Baptist, Cal Poly, UC Riverside and UC San Diego.
California Baptist vs Campbell is the only one of the seven on the opening board. The Lancers have won ten games in four of the past five seasons and made two NCAA Tournaments in four years under Coe Michaelson, now in his eleventh year. Conference play does not start until late September, so this is an audition.
The Northeast Cluster
Men’s college soccer is more concentrated in the Northeast than any other Division I sport, and opening night shows it.

- Robert Morris vs Drexel
- Hartwick vs Northeastern: the most decorated program on this board that most fans have never heard of. Hartwick won the 1977 national championship, spent decades as the rare small college playing Division I in a single sport, and moved men’s soccer to Division III in 2018. The Hawks now play in the Empire 8 out of Oneonta.

- William & Mary vs Longwood: an all-Virginia opener.
- NC State vs Coastal Carolina: the Wolfpack host a Sun Belt side that has been quietly good.

- Cal State Bakersfield vs Utah Tech: the westernmost game on the board.
Why Men’s Opening Night Rewards Early Voters
Men’s college soccer runs an even tighter calendar than the women’s game. The regular season is roughly eleven weeks, conference play starts in late September, and the NCAA Tournament field is smaller than the women’s. There is very little room to recover from a bad August.
