Figures are from the Oregon-Washington series history.

Where the Bad Blood Started

Oregon fans still point to 1948. Oregon and California both went undefeated in the Pacific Coast Conference, and Oregon expected the Rose Bowl bid. Instead the conference voted California in, reportedly after Washington persuaded Montana to back Cal. Oregon went to the Cotton Bowl instead and lost to SMU.

The scorelines got ugly in the 1970s: Oregon won 58-0 in Eugene in 1973, and Washington answered with a 66-0 win in Seattle in 1974, still the largest margin in the series.

Four Games That Define the Rivalry

1994: Kenny Wheaton’s interception

Oregon freshman Kenny Wheaton intercepted Damon Huard and returned it 97 yards for a touchdown in the final minute of a 31-20 Oregon win in Eugene. It ended a five-game losing streak and is often seen as the moment Oregon’s modern program took off.

2016: 70-21

Washington scored 70 points at Autzen Stadium, the first opponent ever to do so, ending Oregon’s 12-game series streak. Quarterback Jake Browning’s “Point” toward the Oregon sideline became rivalry lore.

October 2023: 36-33

No. 7 Washington beat No. 8 Oregon in Seattle in the first meeting between two AP top-10 teams. Michael Penix Jr. threw the winning touchdown to Rome Odunze, and Oregon missed a late field goal.

December 2023: 34-31

The rematch decided the final Pac-12 Championship Game in Paradise, Nevada, the only title-game meeting between the rivals. Washington won again and advanced to the College Football Playoff.

The Rivalry in the Big Ten

Both schools moved to the Big Ten in 2024, and Oregon has won both conference meetings, including a 26-14 win in Seattle on November 29, 2025, as the Daily Emerald reported. Dan Lanning is in his fifth season at Oregon, and Jedd Fisch is in his third at Washington. Because the game closes the regular season, it can shape the Big Ten title race and playoff picture.

  • Home field: The game returns to Autzen Stadium, where Washington’s 70-point night in 2016 still stands as the most by any visitor.
  • Oregon’s streak: A third straight win would extend Oregon’s Big Ten-era edge and trim Washington’s all-time lead to 12 games, while a Huskies win would push it back to 14.

  • Coaching matchup: Lanning has built Oregon into a perennial contender, while Fisch is still building Washington’s Big Ten roster.
