Patriot League Week 1 Preview: Every Game Counts From Day One

No league in America opens like the Patriot League. In 2026, the entire football membership pairs off against itself in Week 1: five games across three straight nights, ten teams, all league stakes, no warmups. Established in 1986 and built on the scholar-athlete model, the Patriot League has ranked first among all Division I scholarship conferences in NCAA Graduation Success Rate every year since 1998, and this fall it welcomes a bigger, deeper football lineup than ever, with Richmond, Villanova, and William & Mary now competing as football associates alongside the league’s historic core. Every matchup is live on RallyFuel. Tap your pick, earn +20 RallyFuel points per vote, and settle in for a league race that starts immediately.

The Thursday Night Curtain-Raiser: Georgetown vs Lafayette

Georgetown hosts Lafayette on Thursday night (Aug. 27, 7 p.m.) to officially open the Patriot League’s 41st season, with the Hoyas welcoming a Leopards program that owns half of college football’s most-played rivalry. A new era of Patriot League football begins under the lights in the nation’s capital.

The Newcomers Collide: Villanova vs William & Mary

Villanova hosts William & Mary under the Friday night lights (Aug. 28, 6 p.m.) in a matchup of the league’s new football additions, pairing the Wildcats’ FCS championship tradition with the Tribe’s colonial-era history from Williamsburg. Two programs that spent years battling each other in another conference now open their Patriot League chapters head to head. Instant rivalry, instant stakes.

Championship Pedigree Meets the Bison: Richmond vs Bucknell

Richmond welcomes Bucknell on Saturday (Aug. 29) to a matchup that shows off the league’s new footprint, with the Spiders’ FCS championship history on display against the Bison, one of the Patriot League’s founding programs.

The Classics

Holy Cross vs Lehigh (Saturday, Aug. 29): two of the league’s most decorated programs collide, with the two-time defending champion Mountain Hawks visiting a Crusaders squad that owned the league in the early 2020s and wants its crown back.

Fordham vs Colgate (Friday, Aug. 28): the Rams host the Raiders in the Bronx in a matchup of programs that have combined for decades of league titles.

The Scholar-Athlete Standard

The Patriot League was created in 1986 at the suggestion of the Ivy League and became a full Division I conference in 1990, and it has never wavered from its founding idea: athletes must be academically representative of their incoming class. That produces graduates, leaders, and some seriously competitive football, with more than 1,700 verified athletes across the league’s 14 schools on RallyFuel. Explore the Patriot League conference hub to browse them all, follow your favorites, and back them directly. Ninety percent of every contribution goes straight to the athlete, refunded if conditions aren’t met. And before you lock in your picks, settle the debates with the School Rivalry tool, where you can compare any two schools side by side on NIL, fan engagement, rankings, and championships.
