SWAC Week 1 Preview: The Biggest Show in FCS Is Back

The Biggest Show in FCS Is Back

Nobody draws like the SWAC. Founded in 1920 and now the nation’s premier HBCU conference, the Southwestern Athletic Conference has led all of FCS in average home attendance every year but one since the subdivision existed, powered by gameday cultures and marching bands, from the Sonic Boom of the South to the Human Jukebox to Grambling’s World Famed, that have no equal anywhere in sports. The 2026 opener brings a league title rematch storyline, marquee HBCU clashes, and the defending champs on the road. Every matchup is live on RallyFuel. Tap your pick, earn +20 RallyFuel points per vote, and be part of the biggest show in FCS.

Conference Points Immediately: Alabama State vs Southern

Alabama State hosts Southern in a Week 1 league matchup that brings the Human Jukebox to Montgomery and puts standings position on the line from the very first Saturday. In a conference where the road to the Celebration Bowl is unforgiving, this one matters. Hornets or Jaguars?

The Champs Hit the Road

Prairie View A&M won the 2025 SWAC Championship in a 23-21 thriller over Jackson State before falling to South Carolina State in a four-overtime Celebration Bowl for the ages. It was the twelfth conference crown for a program that has been playing football since 1907 and owns six Black college national championships of its own. The title defense begins away from home, as the Panthers visit Tarleton State in an all-Texas matchup. Meanwhile, Jackson State travels to Tennessee State for one of the biggest HBCU games of the opening weekend, Tigers versus Tigers with national bragging rights at stake. JSU arrives as the wounded heavyweight of the league: winners of two of the last five Black college national championships, playing home games in a 60,000-seat stadium, and hungry after coming two points short of the SWAC title.

HBCU Showcases Across the South

Texas Southern vs North Carolina Central: a SWAC versus MEAC clash between two proud programs, the kind of matchup that previews Celebration Bowl stakes.

Howard vs Alabama A&M: Alabama A&M takes the SWAC banner to the nation’s capital against a Howard program that won back-to-back MEAC titles in 2022 and 2023, with the Showtime marching band adding one more legendary sound to the weekend.

Grambling State vs Clark Atlanta: the World Famed band and the Tigers open at home against SIAC royalty.

Alcorn State vs Miles College: the Braves, five-time Black college national champions with thirteen SWAC titles on the wall, host another SIAC program in Lorman before pulling road duty later in the week at Southern Miss.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff vs Morehouse College: the Golden Lions get a home date with historic Morehouse, part of a two-game week that also sends them to SEC country against Missouri.

Doubleheaders and Big Stages

Mississippi Valley State opens twice, visiting Nicholls and then traveling to Sacramento State. And Bethune-Cookman takes on UCF in an all-Florida meeting in Orlando, carrying the SWAC flag into a Big 12 stadium.

More Than a Game

SWAC football is a cultural institution. Twelve member schools across East and West divisions, a champion crowned not in the FCS playoffs but in the Celebration Bowl at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, the de facto HBCU national championship, and gamedays where the band battle is as anticipated as the fourth quarter. That community deserves a direct line to its athletes, and that’s what RallyFuel provides. Explore the SWAC conference hub to browse verified athletes across the league, follow your favorites, and back them directly. Ninety percent of every contribution goes straight to the athlete, refunded if conditions aren’t met.
