The 14 games that shape college football’s receiver board

Our NIL Index board found that a receiver’s production separates this board far less than his audience does. Performance is worth 7.0 points of separation across the sixteen. Visibility is worth 9.6, and Visibility is built on national television.

Which makes the schedule a forecast. Below is every relevant game for every receiver we track, weeks 1 through 5, and inside it the fourteen that actually decide something.

The fourteen

Three things worth knowing before the week-by-week tables.

Most of Week 1 is a formality. Ohio State, Indiana, Oklahoma and Texas A&M all host overmatched opponents. Read the counting stats carefully.

Week 2 is the whole season in one night. Ohio State at Texas puts four of our receivers on ABC in prime time.

September is unkind to Malachi Toney. Miami plays four games and not one is a Saturday afternoon network broadcast. For the receiver we pick to finish number one, that affects the timing.

Week 1: mostly theater

Our two boldest calls both get standalone national windows. Colorado plays Georgia Tech on Thursday night at 8:00 on ESPN, in one of the only games on the board that evening. If Danny Scudero is going to convert last year’s national receiving title into a Visibility figure above 39, the schedule could not have set it up better. Miami then gets Friday night at 9:00 on ESPN, essentially alone in the window, exactly the stage a cover athlete wants for his first game carrying that title.

KJ Duff opens a night earlier against UMass, a mismatch that tells us nothing, but the first look at a receiver we think is badly underscored.

Most of the rest is a formality. Ohio State, Indiana, Oklahoma and Texas A&M all host overmatched opponents, and starters may not see a fourth quarter. A quiet afternoon for Jeremiah Smith or Charlie Becker tells you very little.

The genuinely competitive spots are Colorado at Georgia Tech, Boise State at Oregon on CBS — Evan Stewart’s first game in an Oregon uniform since 2024, and the single most anticipated appearance on this board — and SMU at Florida State on Labor Day night, where Duce Robinson’s season starts taking shape.

Texas State at Texas matters for a different reason. It is a mismatch, but it is the first live look at how Steve Sarkisian divides targets between Cam Coleman and Ryan Wingo, the single variable that decides whether either of their scores moves this fall.

Week 2: the real thing

Ohio State at Texas is the most important night of the fall for this board, and nothing else is close. The resale floor is $501, the second most expensive ticket of the season.

Four of the receivers we track are in it, including the board leader and two of the four names in our top six. Jeremiah Smith gets his first real defense, and Smith is the standard our headline call has to clear. Coleman and Wingo split targets against a secondary that can actually cover them, which is the variable we flagged. And Chris Henry Jr., who scores 29.4 on a Visibility of 75 and a Social Power of 72 without ever having caught a college pass, either makes an appearance that starts justifying those numbers or does not.

The second most useful game puts our two least certain calls head to head. Oregon at Oklahoma State on ESPN is Evan Stewart’s first competitive test after a year out, against a defense that will be trying to keep up with Wyatt Young on the other side. Our Young projection assumes his North Texas production travels to the Big 12. Both get answered in the same three hours.

Oklahoma at Michigan is the third to circle: a genuine test of whether Isaiah Sategna’s breakout was real or a function of volume.

And here is the wrinkle for our two boldest calls. After their Week 1 showcases, both Toney and Scudero hit a soft week — an FCS opponent on a Thursday for Miami, another on streaming for Colorado. It is one week rather than a trend, and both are back in front of a real audience by Week 3. But the whole thesis is that platform moves standing faster than production does, and neither can bank anything in the second week of September.

Week 3: the middle of the board gets its turn

Florida State at Alabama puts two receivers in the same broadcast, 3:30 on ABC. One afternoon in Bryant-Denny, in front of the largest audience either will see in September, goes a long way toward settling both.

KJ Duff finally gets a national broadcast. USC at Rutgers, 3:30 on CBS. Duff’s Visibility of 54 is not actually his problem — it beats five receivers on our board. What holds him at twelfth is a Fan Demand of 0 and the third lowest Social Power we track, and Social Power is the component a national afternoon can move. This is the first one he gets.

Amare Thomas gets his best window of the season early. Houston at Texas Tech, Friday night on FOX, a broadcast network and a real opponent. Houston does not draw a national audience, and this is the night that changes for three hours.

And the resale prices say something about Colorado. Their game at Northwestern carries a get-in price of $577 — the cheapest ticket that will get you through the gate. Only LSU at Ole Miss, at $589, is higher that weekend.

Be careful with that number, though. Northwestern is playing in a small temporary stadium, and its prices run high regardless of opponent. The same building carries a $384 get-in for an FCS opener. Supply is doing a lot of the work.

The comparison is still the point. Colorado moves that building’s floor from $384 to $577, close to a $200 premium over what it commands for a nonconference filler, and it does that as a visiting team. A receiver who led the country in yards, playing for the program that adds two hundred dollars to somebody else’s ticket, does not sit at a Visibility of 39 through October.

One caveat on all of these figures: they move. This game was $589 when we first pulled it and $577 a few days later. Read them as a rough measure of attention rather than a fixed price.

Week 4: conference play, and the schedule inverts

Almost every Saturday game here has no announced time or network. That is conference play beginning and the networks holding their selection windows, which is itself a signal: these are the games worth picking, and assignments land about twelve days out.

Texas at Tennessee is the September finale for the top of the board. A $364 get-in, Neyland at noon. Coleman and Wingo will have played Ohio State and Tennessee inside three weeks, which is as much high leverage exposure as any receiver pair in the country gets. If the target split is going to resolve, it resolves by the end of this month.

Oklahoma at Georgia is the other one that matters, a $289 get-in and a real test of how Isaiah Sategna’s production translates against an elite defense. Oregon at USC does the same for Evan Stewart, in what would be his first genuinely difficult assignment of the season.

Charlie Becker gets the best window of his month. Northwestern at Indiana, Friday night on FOX, standalone. Becker sits third on our board with the lowest Performance figure of any receiver who played. He is not short of exposure — Indiana are the defending national champions and his Visibility of 76 is third highest here. What put him ahead of Alabama’s Ryan Coleman-Williams is a Fan Demand of 40 against 0, worth ten points of composite. Nobody else in the top six has more than 15.

And here is the one thing that could delay our Toney call.

Miami’s September, in order: Stanford on Friday night on ESPN, Florida A&M on Thursday on ACC Network, Wake Forest on Friday night on ESPN, Central Michigan on Saturday evening on the CW. Not one Saturday afternoon network broadcast in the whole month, and the resale prices show it: $18 for the Florida A&M game and $19 for Central Michigan, the cheapest ticket on the entire Week 4 board. It is a genuinely soft month of exposure for the most marketable cover athlete in college football.

It does not change the call. Toney is already second at 53.3, one point behind Jeremiah Smith, and he already leads Smith on Visibility, 85 to 75. He does not need September television to get where we say he is going. He needs to close a seven point Performance gap, and that closes on the field.

What the schedule affects is timing, not direction. If he is still second on October 1, this is why — and Miami at Clemson two days later is where it turns.

Week 5: the answer arrives, one week late

Miami at Clemson is the game we said Toney’s September was missing. A conference road test against the ACC’s marquee brand, on a Saturday, with a $93 get-in. It arrives one week into October, which is exactly the timing problem we flagged, resolved rather than avoided. Toney’s first genuinely national Saturday of the season is October 3.

Indiana at Rutgers puts our two most underscored receivers in the same building. Becker and Duff, Saturday night, a $78 get-in. Both have tape well ahead of their number, both play for programs that suppress national attention, and one of them is going to have a bigger night than the other in front of the same audience.

And the top of the board goes dark. Texas, Oregon, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are all idle — five of our receivers off the board the same weekend, immediately after the three biggest tests any of them faced. For scores that update weekly, an idle Saturday is a week of drift.

One more date worth marking

Texas vs. Oklahoma, Cotton Bowl, October 10. Red River carries a $516 get-in, the most expensive ticket of the season so far, edging out Ohio State at Texas at $501. Cam Coleman, Ryan Wingo and Isaiah Sategna are all in it.

Which means Texas receivers appear in both of the two biggest games of the fall. Whatever Coleman and Wingo are worth in December will have been decided in Austin on September 12, Knoxville on September 26 and Dallas on October 10. No pair on this list has a denser stretch of high leverage exposure, and none has less excuse if the numbers do not move.

Worth noting for contrast: Miami, Colorado and Rutgers are all idle that weekend. Toney, Scudero and Duff, three of our four boldest calls, sit out the biggest Saturday of the month.
