Last updated: November 1, 2026

College wrestling 2026-27 starts with the same question as the last five seasons: can anyone stop Penn State? The Nittany Lions open No. 1 in the NWCA preseason coaches poll after an NCAA-record 181.5-point title in March, but Oklahoma State, which produced three of last season’s record four freshman national champions, is ranked a close No. 2.

Quick summary

  • Penn State won its fifth straight NCAA team title (14th overall) in March 2026 with a record 181.5 points; Oklahoma State was second with 131.
  • Penn State crowned four champions: Luke Lilledahl (125), Mitchell Mesenbrink (165), Levi Haines (174) and Josh Barr (197).
  • A record four freshmen won titles, three of them from Oklahoma State.
  • The NWCA preseason top five: Penn State, Oklahoma State, Nebraska, Iowa and Virginia Tech.

The Penn State Dynasty by the Numbers

At the 2026 NCAA Division I Championships in Cleveland, Penn State scored 181.5 points, the most in NCAA history, finishing 50.5 points ahead of Oklahoma State. It was the program’s fifth consecutive team title and 14th overall, and Cael Sanderson’s 13th as head coach.

  • NCAA team titles: 14, including five straight
  • Titles under Cael Sanderson: 13
  • 2026 team score: 181.5, an NCAA record
  • 2026 champions: Lilledahl (125), Mesenbrink (165), Haines (174), Barr (197)

College Wrestling 2026-27 Preseason Rankings

The NWCA Division I coaches poll, released October 28, has Penn State No. 1 with 16 first-place votes and 400 points after a 15-0 dual season. Oklahoma State (15-1 last season) is No. 2 with 382 points.

  1. Penn State, 400 points
  2. Oklahoma State, 382
  3. Nebraska, 362
  4. Iowa, 344
  5. Virginia Tech, 338
  6. Ohio State, 322
  7. Stanford, 312
  8. Minnesota, 265
  9. Iowa State, 249
  10. Missouri, 248

The 18-point gap between first and second is much closer than last March’s 50.5-point margin at nationals, a sign coaches see a real race.

The Challenger: Oklahoma State

Oklahoma State had three of the record four freshman champions last March: Jax Forrest (133), Sergio Vega (141) and Landon Robideau (157). Stanford’s Aden Valencia (149) was the fourth. Those three Cowboys are now sophomores with a national title already in hand, giving Oklahoma State the young core to push Penn State.

To win, the Cowboys likely need their stars to repeat and Penn State to slip somewhere in a deep lineup. Follow them on the Oklahoma State wrestling page on RallyFuel, and read about the school’s athlete pay in our Oklahoma State NIL guide.

What to Watch This College Wrestling Season

Can Penn State keep raising the bar?

Penn State has now set the NCAA team scoring record in three straight years, and its dual-meet dominance continued with a 15-0 season. Another title would make six in a row, extending one of the longest runs in college sports.

Do the Oklahoma State sophomores take another step?

Three national champions in a single sophomore class is rare in college wrestling, and it gives the Cowboys a core that could contend for several seasons. If Forrest, Vega and Robideau repeat and the Cowboys add points elsewhere, the gap could close quickly.

Who breaks into the top tier?

Nebraska, Iowa and Virginia Tech are separated by just 24 poll points. A strong showing at the Big Ten and ACC championships could decide which program becomes the third contender in March.

The NIL Angle

NIL money in wrestling is uneven. A few stars at well-funded programs earn significant deals, but most Division I wrestlers earn little or nothing, and revenue sharing usually favors football and basketball.
