What the Rankings Tell Us
Ohio State’s lead is clear but not enormous. It holds 300 points to Minnesota’s 276 and Wisconsin’s 263, and the USA Hockey poll released Nov. 3 shows the same top three in the same order. That poll also has Ohio State first, with 19 first-place votes.
Four of the top seven teams come from Big Ten schools: Ohio State, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Penn State. If you follow the sport in the Midwest, that is the group to watch. For the men’s side of the Gophers-Badgers rivalry, read our Minnesota vs. Wisconsin hockey preview.
How the Two Polls Compare
The two national polls agree on almost everything. Ohio State, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Northeastern, Princeton, Quinnipiac, Penn State and Colgate hold the same eight spots in both. The only difference in the top 10 is at the bottom: the USCHO.com poll has Clarkson ninth and St. Cloud State tenth, while the USA Hockey poll flips them. The USA Hockey poll also gives Ohio State 285 points to Minnesota’s 260 and Wisconsin’s 253, a slightly tighter race at the top than the 300-276-263 split in the USCHO.com poll.
Both polls end their top 15 the same way, with Yale, Minnesota Duluth, Connecticut, Cornell and Boston College in spots 11 through 15. That tells you voters are working from the same picture of the season so far, and it makes the upcoming head-to-head games the most likely source of change.
Records Worth a Second Look
Princeton’s 6-0-0 start is the cleanest in the poll, though the Tigers have played fewer games than Ohio State, which has played 12. Clarkson has the second-most wins in the top 10 at 10-2-0 yet sits at No. 9, below teams with fewer wins. St. Cloud State is No. 10 at 8-4-0, the most losses in the top 10. Lower in the poll, Yale is No. 11 at 2-1-1 after just four games, and Connecticut is No. 13 at 4-4-2.
Records can mislead early in a season because schedules are uneven, and a poll reflects more than win totals. Northeastern (7-1-1), for example, is ranked above Quinnipiac (8-2-1) even though the Huskies have fewer wins.
Games to Watch This Week
According to the USCHO schedule, three games between ranked teams are coming up:
- Thursday, Nov. 5: No. 13 UConn at No. 15 Boston College.
- Friday, Nov. 6: No. 8 Colgate at No. 5 Princeton.
- Friday, Nov. 6: No. 14 Cornell at No. 6 Quinnipiac.
Colgate at Princeton is the headline: the Tigers’ unbeaten record meets a Raiders team that is 8-2-0. Cornell at Quinnipiac pairs No. 14 (4-2-0) with No. 6 (8-2-1), and UConn (4-4-2) at Boston College (6-3-0) matches two teams at the bottom of the top 15, where one result can move a team several spots.
