They have met more often than any two teams in the sport. In February 2026 they met as the two best teams in it.
On the first weekend of February 2026, Michigan was ranked first in the country and Michigan State was ranked second. They played each other twice in two nights.
Friday at Yost Ice Arena, Michigan won 4 to 3 in overtime. Saturday at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan State won 5 to 2. Two games, two winners, nothing settled. If you wanted a single weekend to explain why this is the sport’s defining series, that was it.
The most played rivalry in college hockey
Michigan and Michigan State have faced each other more times than any other pairing in college hockey. Michigan leads the all time series, and has since the earliest decades, when the Wolverines were close to unbeatable in it. Michigan’s longest winning streak in the series ran to 19 games between 1928 and 1954, and its longest unbeaten run reached 33 games from 1928 to 1957. The largest single win still belongs to Michigan, 17 to 1 in 1950.
The modern era is a different sport. From November 1995 through February 2026, Michigan’s own record book puts the series at 73 wins, 54 losses and 18 ties in the Wolverines’ favor. Look at the last ten meetings and it is dead even at five apiece.
Home ice explains a lot of that. Over the same span Michigan is 30 wins, 12 losses and 4 ties in Ann Arbor, and 15 wins, 22 losses and 8 ties in East Lansing. Yost seats 5,800. Munn seats 6,114. Neither is a comfortable place to visit.
The Detroit game
Since 1991 the two schools have met every year on neutral ice in Detroit, first at Joe Louis Arena and now at Little Caesars Arena. The game is known as the Duel in the D, and because Little Caesars seats 19,515 for hockey, more than any regular college rink in the country, it is annually among the best attended games in the sport.
Michigan leads the Detroit series 19 wins, 14 losses and 5 ties.
Since 2016 the winner has taken home the Iron D, a trophy built around a forged iron letter D with the Detroit skyline wrapped around its base, designed and made by Erik and Israel Nordin at the Detroit Design Center. Michigan State has now won it three years running, in 2024, 2025 and 2026.
Twice they moved it outdoors
In October 2001 the teams played at Spartan Stadium in a game billed as the Cold War, at the time the largest outdoor hockey game ever staged.
Nine years later they went bigger. On December 11, 2010, the Big Chill at the Big House drew 104,173 people to Michigan Stadium. It set the world record for attendance at a hockey game, and while the 2014 NHL Winter Classic later passed it overall, the Big Chill remains the largest crowd ever to watch a college hockey game.
The first NCAA meeting took 99 years
For all the games these two have played, they had never met in the NCAA tournament until March 2024, when they were drawn together in a regional final. Michigan won 5 to 2 and moved on to its third straight Frozen Four.
2026: they split everything
The February weekend was not an outlier. It was the whole season.
Michigan State took the Big Ten regular season title, its third in a row and the first time the program has won three consecutive conference championships. Michigan finished second in the standings.
Then it inverted. Michigan won the Big Ten Tournament on home ice at Yost, the program’s fourth tournament title, with T.J. Hughes named most outstanding player, and claimed the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Michigan State, the top seed, went out in the semifinals and finished the year 26 wins, 9 losses and 2 ties, reaching a regional final.
One team won the long season. The other won the weekend that decided the trophy. Neither got the last word.

Common questions
Is Michigan versus Michigan State really the most played rivalry in college hockey? Yes. No two programs in the sport have met more often, and the schools schedule at least four meetings most seasons through Big Ten play plus the annual neutral site game in Detroit.
What is the Iron D? The trophy awarded to the winner of the annual Detroit game at Little Caesars Arena, introduced in 2016. Michigan State has won it in each of the last three years.
Who won the 2026 meetings? The teams split all four. Michigan won 3 to 0 in East Lansing in December and 4 to 3 in overtime at Yost in February. Michigan State won 3 to 1 in Ann Arbor in December and 5 to 2 at the Duel in the D in February.
Have they ever met in the NCAA tournament? Once, in a regional final in March 2024. Michigan won 5 to 2.
What next season looks like
Michigan State will chase a fourth straight Big Ten regular season title. Michigan will defend a conference tournament championship. They will play each other at least four times, and at least one of those nights will be in a building far bigger than either calls home.
Nothing about that is new. That is rather the point.
