Colin Mitchell had about half a second to decide.
Kye Robinson’s baseline jumper came off short. An airball, actually, with the game tied at 73 and the clock running out on the 2026 NCAA Division III championship. Mitchell caught it and put it back up in one motion. It dropped as the horn sounded.
Mary Washington 75, Emory 73. First national title in program history, in front of a crowd at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on April 5.
The Eagles won 30 games and lost 3, a program record under Marcus Kahn, now in his twelfth season. And they did it with fifteen players, none of them seniors.
The game was nearly gone
For most of the second half this looked like Emory’s night. Atlanta’s Eagles missed eleven of their first twelve shots and still led at the break, 30 to 28, dragged there by Jair Knight, who had 13 by halftime including a dunk with two seconds on the clock. Three minutes into the second half Emory was up 43 to 35.
Then Robinson happened. He scored seven during a stretch in which Mary Washington outscored Emory 14 to 2, putting the Eagles ahead 49 to 45. Another burst, again 14 points to 2, built a 13 point lead at 63 to 50 with 4:49 left, and the game looked finished.
It was not. Emory erased all thirteen points in under five minutes, capped by an Ethan Fauss three that tied it with twelve seconds remaining. Fauss and Knight scored 24 apiece. Mario Awasum pulled down nineteen rebounds. Ben Pearce, Emory’s career scoring leader and the only player in program history past 2,000 points, missed his first seven shots before finally hitting a three inside the last ninety seconds.
Twelve seconds was all Mary Washington needed. Robinson finished with 27 points on 12 of 22 shooting, plus eight rebounds, four assists and four steals. Jay Randall added 14. Kaden Bates went for 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Six games, one bracket, zero easy nights
The title did not arrive out of nowhere, but it was not a coronation either.
Mary Washington opened with an 86 to 55 dismantling of Worcester State, then handled Amherst 81 to 64 in the second round, where Randall put up 12 points and 11 rebounds. The sectional against Wisconsin-La Crosse was where the season announced itself: a 73 to 68 win at Ron Rosner Arena in Fredericksburg, with Robinson scoring 35 and grabbing 11.
The quarterfinal against Chicago went 81 to 73, Randall leading with 22 on 10 of 15 shooting, Ulysses Young adding 13 and Jadon Burgess 11.
Then the semifinal, which people will still be describing in ten years. Trinity came in as the defending national champion and the top ranked team in the country. Mary Washington fell behind by double digits, then scored the last ten points of the game. Bates hit the winner from the right corner with 24 seconds left, from the same spot he had missed one a few possessions earlier. 64 to 61.
Worth noting: Emory had ended Mary Washington’s season the year before, 80 to 78. The rematch took a full year and a buzzer beater to settle.
The Prince William County pipeline
A third of this roster grew up within a few miles of each other in Northern Virginia.
Bates and Randall are 2023 Patriot High graduates. Hasan Hammad came out of Battlefield in 2023. Ethan Kacou of Patriot and Preston White of Gainesville are 2025 grads. Several of them have known each other since fifth grade, playing with and against one another long before they shared a locker room in Fredericksburg.
Kahn knows exactly what he has there. Prince William County is in his backyard, and he has spent years building relationships with the coaches in it. That is recruiting without a budget: showing up, knowing who is who, and being trusted.
Hammad’s route was different. He spent his first seasons at Christopher Newport, another C2C program, before transferring in for his junior year and winning a ring in his first season with the Eagles.
The part nobody funds
Here is the thing about a Division III national championship: there is no scholarship money attached to any of it.
Robinson averaged close to 25 points a game this season. He made the Bevo Francis Award Top 50 Watch List, took C2C Player of the Year, and earned All America honors from the NABC. In Division I that kind of season comes with a valuation, an agent’s phone number and a collective. In Division III it comes with a trophy and a class schedule.
That is not a complaint about DIII. The model is the model, and these players chose it. But it does mean the gap between what these athletes produce and what they receive is close to total. A team that fills an arena, wins a national title and puts a city on a parade route is generating real value. The athletes in small programs capture almost none of it unless someone deliberately routes it back to them.
That is the whole argument for support that comes straight from fans. No booster class is going to fund a DIII roster. No brand is buying a national campaign around a C2C guard. What exists instead is a few thousand people in Fredericksburg who watched this happen and would back these players directly if there were a clean, compliant way to do it.
There is. Find the athletes near you and fuel them.
Running it back
On April 18 the Eagles loaded onto a trolley on campus and rode it into downtown Fredericksburg behind four police cars, on a Saturday that hit 85 degrees, past hundreds of people holding balloons and handmade signs. Forty minutes later they climbed out at their own arena with the trophy, gave some speeches, and signed autographs until the crowd thinned.
It was the first national championship game appearance by any Mary Washington team, in any sport, since the 1993 field hockey team.
And every player who won it is eligible to come back. No seniors on the roster. Hammad’s read on next season was three words: running it back.
The defending champions return everyone. Get in early.
